Scope and Content Lochside Distillery, Montrose, Angus Lochside Distillery began as a brewery in the 18th century. Brewing was one of the industries which developed rapidly at this time as a result of growing population and rising incomes. The present building was designed by the architect C C Doig and built in 1889. The most interesting part of the building is a French Renaissance-style tower, with louvred ventilators on the top floor. In 1957 the brewery was converted to a distillery with four pairs of pot-stills. It is both a grain and a malt distillery. Maize is the most important ingredient in grain whisky. Malt is also used but does not need to be peat-smoked first. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
