Scope and Content View from top of Fife cantilever on Forth Bridge, looking south The Forth Railway Bridge was built in 1882-90 by Sir John Fowler and Benjamin Baker after Thomas Bouch lost the original contract in 1879 when his Tay Bridge collapsed. The massive structure was intended to prevent a similar disaster. This view is looking down the Fife cantilever. Each arm of the three cantilever is extended at the same rate so as to maintain the balance of the structure. The approach spans are supported on stone piers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
