Scope and Content Choir at Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This drawing shows the profile-moulding of the upper part of the quoin (or corner) of the NE buttress of the choir. It is moulded with a keel-roll and two quarter-rolls. The choir was the focus of the religious ceremoniesl, with the altar standing in the presbytery at the E end. Most of the choir dates from the 15th century, though parts of the N wall date from the early 13th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
