Scope and Content Anchor Thread works, Paisley, Renfrewshire Paisley had been a centre of linen thread manufacture since the 18th century, when it had 93 twisting mills in operation. By the mid-19th century, it was one of the most important centres of cotton thread manufacture in Britain. Two famous thread families, the Clarks and the Coats, amalgamated in 1896. The Anchor Thread Works began as Ferguslie Mills, a small factory, but grew to giant proportions. By the end of the 19th century it was the largest thread works in the world. A skipping song commemorates this important part of Paisley's history; 'Clarks, they have the anchor, Coats, they have the chain, Paisley has the cotton trade And long may it remain'.
