Scope and Content View of the pulley wheels at Lady Victoria Colliery, Newtongrange, Midlothian The Lothian Coal Company sank the Lady Victoria shaft in 1890. The head of the company, the Marquess of Lothian, named the pit after his wife. The pit was designed to use the best working practices of the time. The pit-head gantry supported the pulley-wheels over which the winding ropes went down to the cages. The steam winding engine powered the wheels. The engine was made by Grant, Ritchie and Company of Kilmarnock in 1894 and lasted for many decades. Coal became very important during the 19th century. It was used to produce the steam to power factories, railways and ships. It played a vital role in the Industrial Revolution. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
