Scope and Content The Nunnery, The Cross, Culross, Fife The Nunnery was probably built some time in the 17th century. It must derive its name from the carved head of a veiled woman at the base of the crow-stepped gable since any nuns in 17th-century Scotland would have been in hiding. This photograph shows the building before it was restored, harled and painted. It has an L-shaped ground-plan with a forestair leading to the first-floor entrance.
