Scope and Content Royal Clyde Yacht Club (now the Royal Marine Hotel), Marine Parade, Hunter's Quay, Dunoon, Argyll & Bute The Royal Clyde Yacht Club, designed by the Glasgow architect, Thomas Lennox Watson, stands in a prominent position overlooking the Firth of Clyde at Hunter's Quay. This photograph of the exterior was taken in 1890 by the photographer, Bedford Lemere. The clubhouse and the adjoining hotel have half-timbered gables and tall mullioned and transomed windows in the style of a Tudor hall. The first-floor balcony, which takes full advantage of the sea views, forms a sheltered colonnade on the terrace below. The Clyde rapidly became a popular centre for yachting, second only to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. By the end of the 19th century, the Royal Clyde Yacht Club had 1,000 members and over 400 yachts. It challenged for the Americas Cup in 1886 and 1888. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
