Scope and Content Billiard Room, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812. In 1892 the house was extended by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, and refurbished by Wylie & Lochhead, Glasgow, for John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This room has a Jacobean-style panelled ceiling and dado, and an inglenook fireplace with upholstered seating. The table is lit by an elaborate electric light fitting, and ventilation grilles are set into the ceiling panels. The figure of the magician in the corner (left) is an example of an automaton or mechanical toy. Automata, clockwork figures made from wood, porcelain and metal, were made between the 16th and 18th centuries as toys for the children the very rich. They operated by a complex mechanical system of concealed rods, gears and levers, and performed complicated actions and tricks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
