Scope and Content Hamilton & Inches, Goldsmiths and Silversmiths, No 88 Princes Street, Edinburgh Hamilton & Inches, founded in 1866 by Robert Kirk Inches and his uncle, James Hamilton, opened their new premises at No 88 Princes Street, Edinburgh, in 1888. The exterior of the shop was photographed in 1895 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The premises occupy part of a late 18th-century building, with a 19th-century shop front built out at ground level. The royal crest indicates that the firm were appointed 'goldsmiths, silversmiths, clock & watchmakers to Her Majesty' Queen Victoria. Hamilton & Inches opened a shop in Princes Street in 1866, selling jewellery and repairing watches and clocks. In 1888 they incorporated the old firm of Robert Bryson & Sons, and expanded into new premises that included their own craftsmen's workshop. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
