Scope and Content Interior of Hamilton & Inches, Goldsmiths and Silversmiths, No 88 Princes Street, Edinburgh Messrs Hamilton & Inches, 'goldsmiths, silversmiths, clock & watchmakers to Her Majesty', opened their new premises at No 88 Princes Street in 1888. This photograph of the interior of the shop was taken in 1895 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The shop, remodelled from the ground floor of a late 18th-century house, has a large top-lit saloon built to the rear. The display cases contain a huge selection of gold and gem jewellery, silver plate and traditional Scottish pieces such as snuff mills. The policy of the firm was that goods 'should be of high quality and good value' and should be priced 'to suit every pocket'. The silversmithing workshop produced replicas of ancient Scottish jewellery and tableware, including the quaich or drinking bowl. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
