Scope and Content Interior of Hamilton & Inches, Goldsmiths, Silversmiths, Clock and Watchmakers, No 88 Princes Street, Edinburgh The firm of Hamilton & Inches, 'clock & watchmakers to Her Majesty' Queen Victoria, was founded by Robert Inches and James Hamilton in 1866. The interior of their Princes Street premises was photographed in 1895 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The shop, reconstructed from the ground floor of a late Georgian house, is lined with cases displaying 'chronometers ranging from 50 to 100 guineas', and a range of gentlemen's watches, designed to be attached to a chain and carried in a waistcoat pocket. Robert Inches was later appointed as 'His Majesty's Clockmaker and Keeper and Dresser of His Majesty's Clocks, Watches and Pendulums in Palaces and Houses in his Ancient Kingdom of Scotland', a unique title dating from the reign of King James VI.
