Scope and Content Detail drawing of chain and hanger connections of St Devenick Bridge, Cults, Aberdeenshire St Devenick Bridge, a suspension footbridge across the River Dee, was built in 1837 by Dr George Morison, minister of Banchory-Devenick, so that people from the north part of his parish could come to church. It was designed by John Smith. The rods making up the two chains hung between the pylons are connected to each other, and to the hangers, by iron link-pins and flat links (B). Each hanger is bolted (D) to a cross-beams and runner-beam. This system was first devised Samuel Brown. John Smith, architect (1781-1852), worked on Aberdeen's Wellington Bridge (completed 1831) with Samuel Brown, the pioneer of British suspension bridges. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
