Scope and Content Part of drawing showing structural diagram of 1913 side-door hangar at Montrose Airfield, Angus The three 1913 hangars at Montrose Airfield were originally designed for Dysart Airfield and replaced temporary canvas and timber structures. The timber roof-frame is conventional for its time, except that it uses iron rods to support the structure. Access for the planes was provided by four sliding doors under each of the triangulated roofs. The plane, a Maurice Farman, was a stable two-seater used for training. Montrose Airfield replaced Dysart Airfield as the base of Nos 1and 2 Flights of the Royal Flying Corps in 1913. It saw action in World War I as the station of an anti-Zeppelin flight, and in World War II when enemy action destroyed one of the hangars. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
