Scope and Content Part of drawing showing detail of voussoirs and transverse rib of Friockheim Railway Viaduct Friockheim Railway Viaduct was built around 1840 for the Arbroath and Forfar Railway line between Arbroath and Montrose. This route was superseded in the 1880s by the North British Railway's direct coastal line. The viaduct was disused by 1914. The viaduct measures 189m in length and is 8.46m wide. It has eight (originally nine) elliptical arches to carry the railway line. At the southern end, two arches are infilled after modifications associated with a later girder bridge. This sketch shows a detail of a voussoir and transverse rib on one of the arches. Voussoirs are the wedge-shaped stones which are used to form an arch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
