Scope and Content Drawing of south-bank mechanism of bascule bridge, Craigmarloch, Forth and Clyde Canal, Dunbartonshire This bascule bridge was built as part of the Forth Clyde Canal. It was one of the last of the canal's structures to retain original features. The handle (6) turns the spur (5) driving the pinions (3) which engage with the internal spur gear (2) on the fixed frame (1). This rotates the arm of the bridge on the shoe-pivot (8). The balance-arm (9) counter-balances the weight of the bridge. The Forth-Clyde was Scotland's earliest major, and also longest, canal. It was built in stages between 1768 and 1791. Its structures decayed rapidly after it closed in 1962. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
