Scope and Content Detail of rotary drive and gearing of steam crane at Victoria Dock, Dundee Harbour Dundee Harbour became a centre for the jute and whaling industries in the 19th century. The Victoria Dock was begun in 1833 by the harbour engineer James Leslie to designs by Thomas Telford. It was completed 1869-75 by David Cunningham. Victoria Dock was one of two deeper docks built to take larger vessels, and which also had better warehousing and other ancillary facilities than earlier docks in the city. Cranes were a common sight in docks, and were used to load and unload cargoes. This shows part of the workings of a 90-ton steam crane in Victoria Dock. It was made by James Taylor & Company of Birkenhead in 1874. One of the largest cranes in the Dundee docks, it was powered by steam. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
