Scope and Content View from south west of cottage at Lock 11 at Dunardry on the Crinan Canal The Crinan Canal was built in 1794-1801 to join Loch Gilp and Loch Crinan and is still operational. Though only 14.48km long, its construction was difficult because the ground was either too soft or too rocky. In common with other canals, cottages were built alongside the locks, providing accommodation for the lock-keepers, who were responsible for opening and closing the lock gates to allow traffic to progress along the canal.
