Scope and Content Painted ceiling on second floor of 1597-block of Culross Palace, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. Original distemper paintings survive on the ceiling and walls of the top floor of the oldest part of the palace. They were painted in a style popular in Holland Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
