Scope and Content Lauriston Castle, Cramond Road South, Edinburgh Lauriston Castle, a late 16th-century tower-house built for Sir Archibald Napier, stands in wooded grounds with uninterrupted views over the Firth of Forth. The house was extended in the 19th century, and was bequeathed to the nation in 1926. The four-storeyed tower-house, with its two-storeyed corner turrets and huge wall-head chimney, forms the main block of the castle. To the east is a gabled entrance hall and a three-bayed dining room, part of a Jacobean extension by William Burn in 1827. Lauriston Castle, originally built for Sir Archibald Napier of Merchiston, father of John Napier, inventor of logarithms, was owned by the Law family until 1823. It then changed hands several times until its last owner, Mrs Reid, left it to the nation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
