Scope and Content View from south showing Dunstaffnage Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunstaffnage Castle stands c.5km north-east of Oban. The original part of the castle was built for the MacDougall Lords of Lorn in the mid-13th century. It was added to in the late 15th or early 16th century when it passed to the Campbell Earls of Argyll. This shows the setting of the castle. Its position on a rocky outcrop at the end of a peninsula meant it commanded excellent views along Loch Etive, the Pass of Brander, the Firth of Lorn and the Sound of Mull. The bay also provided excellent anchorage. Further alterations to the castle were made from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and in 1962, the castle was taken into the care of the Department of the Environment (now Historic Scotland), who have carried out extensive repairs.
