Description Aerial view from the North West.

Catalogue Number SC 366602

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Aerial view of Dunstaffnage Castle at mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougall lords of Lorn and taken from them by Robert Bruce after a battle and a siege around 1309. The first Campbell Earl of Argyll became custodian in 1321-2. This shows how the castle stands on the narrow peninsula controlling entrance to Loch Etive. The pier is modern. Until well into the 18th century, Argyll's sea-lanes were more strategically important than its roads. Most trade went by boat, and it was easier to sail on the sea lochs than to march through the mountainous interior where armies were easily ambushed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
