Scope and Content North transept at Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This passage runs along inside the E wall of the N transept at first-floor level. It now links the buildings of the E range to the choir. As well as providing this access, it also reduced the weight of the walls on the vaults of the two chapels below. The N transept is one of the oldest parts of the church still standing. Along with short sections of the N wall of the nave and choir, it belongs to the original Benedictine abbey from around 1200 AD. It was restored between 1902 and 1904.
