Scope and Content Engraving showing Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel, Argyll and Bute Dunstaffnage Castle stands c.5km north-east of Oban. The original part of the castle was built for the MacDougall Lords of Lorn in the mid-13th century. It was added to in the late 15th or early 16th century when it passed to the Campbell Earls of Argyll. This engraving shows the castle (right) and the remains of the neighbouring chapel (left) and Campbell burial-aisle as they stood in c.1800. It shows the crowstepped gable of the gatehouse surrounded by the crenellated curtain wall. Further alterations to the castle took place throughout the 16th to 19th centuries, and in 1962, the castle was taken into the care of the Department of the Environment (now Historic Scotland), who have carried out extensive repairs.
