Scope and Content Sedilia in Presbytery at Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. The piscina (font) and sedilia (seating) lie along the S wall of the presbytery. The piscina, (left) is damaged. Its bowl is supported by two winged-creatures, with angels above. The sedilia comprises three arches with weathered carved head in between. The E corbel (on the left) is very weathered, but is carved in the shape of a mitred abbot or bishop. The corbel on the right is a modern copy. The spaces behind the corbels allowed the officiating clergy seated in the sedilia to communicate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
