Scope and Content Detail of binder curtains hanging in granary, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands At an altitude of some 60m above sea level, Warsetter is on the highest point of Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday has fertile soils and a temperate climate favourable for its agricultural economy. Warsetter was a mixed arable farm with cattle and sheep. This shows the canvas binder curtains which were attached to the binder during harvesting. After use, the curtains were cleaned, dried and, if necessary, repaired. Occasionally, their straps needed to be renewed. The curtains could be rolled up and stored in the rafters until needed again. These canvas curtains were strapped onto the binder. One of the rotating curtains lined the floor of the binder to catch the newly-cut crop while a second fed it into the buncher which prepared the crop in sheaves which were thrown out of the back of the binder ready for stacking.
