Scope and Content Threshing barn, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from east-south-east Warsetter is on Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with fertile soils and a temperate climate. Warsetter, located on the highest point of the island, is a well-preserved example of a 19th-century Orcadian steading. This shows the two-storeyed, stone threshing barn which held the threshing machine, straw barn, sheave loft, grain dresser and grain bruiser. The original open walk horse engine was on the north side of the building but no trace now exists. The threshing barn is part of the main steading complex. Sheaves were brought to the threshing barn where straw and grains were separated. The straw went to the straw barn while the grain was dressed and bruised ready for use. Grain was bruised to make it more digestible for cattle if it was to be used for feed. Dressing removed thin grain, weed seeds and chaff. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
