Scope and Content Granary, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south Warsetter is a fine, well-preserved example of a characteristic 19th-century Orcadian steading. Unused since the late 1980s, it has altered little and been well-maintained. Warsetter lies on the highest point of Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. This shows the granary, extending west from a long byre and forming one side of the yard in the main rectangular steading complex. The ground floor of the building is a byre which opens onto the yard on the other side. This door is the entrance to the granary on the upper floor, reached by a set of stone steps. Three generations of the McKay family were tenants of Warsetter during the 19th century. The last, John McKay, enclosed the farm with stone dykes and built a comfortable new house and substantial steading. The farm passed to the present owners, the Horne family, in the late 19th century.
