Scope and Content Threshing barn, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-west Warsetter is on Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with fertile soils and a temperate climate. Unused since the late 1980s, Warsetter's steading is a well-preserved example of a large 19th-century, Orcadian, stone-built steading. This shows the two-storeyed threshing barn which held the threshing machine, straw barn, sheave loft, grain dresser and grain bruiser. The single-storeyed building extending from it is the engine house where the engine that powered the threshing machine was located. Both buildings have the flagstone roofs characteristic of Orkney steadings. Warsetter was a mixed arable farm with cattle and sheep and these steadings were built in the 19th century when three generations of the McKay family were tenants. The first engine installed was made by Campbells. Thought to be the first of its type in Orkney, it was a single-cylinder model, replaced in 1952. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
