Scope and Content Threshing barn, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Warsetter is a particularly fine and well-preserved example of a large 19th-century Orcadian steading. At an altitude of some 60m above sea level, it sits at the highest point of Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands, and some 38.6km north-east of Kirkwall. This shows the two-storeyed threshing barn, with single-storeyed engine house attached on the left. It stands at the entrance to the main steading complex, built by John McKay, tenant of Warsetter in the 19th century, when Orkney experienced a period of sustained agricultural improvement and development. Farm architecture on Orkney mainly takes the form of houses and steadings constructed between about 1840 and 1870. Usually, the tenant was responsible for construction while landlords supplied materials such as wood and slates. The lack of trees on Orkney meant that timber had to be imported.
