Scope and Content Plan of Mary King's Close, City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh Mary King's Close dates from the 16th century and took its name from Alexander King, Advocate to Mary Queen of Scots, and his daughter, Mary. It was abandoned in the 18th century and has the reputation of being haunted. Mary King's Close, bricked up in 1645 to contain an outbreak of the plague, led off the High Street down to the Nor' Loch. Much of the Close and neighbouring Allan's Close is still intact today, including shops and houses in their original state. In the 18th century, the ruinous tenements of Mary King's, Allan's, Stewart's, and Pearson's Closes were purchased, demolished and the debris used to build the Castle Esplanade. The City Chambers was built over the site of the closes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
