Description Detail of moulded skewputt

Catalogue Number SC 361996

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of A 62043

Scope and Content Detail of moulded skewputt on main block at Avonbank Bleach and Dye Works, Larkhall, Strathclyde Avonbank Bleach and Dye Works was converted from a printworks c.1836 for D C Miller & Company who imported cotton cloth from Lancashire and, using beetling machines, manufactured cotton roller blinds with a dust-repellent finish known as 'Scotch Holland'. This is a decoratively carved scroll skewputt (stone at the bottom of a gable) on the main block. This particular scroll design incorporates a central rosette and carved rope decoration. The bleach works complex consists of a main three-storeyed, four-by-ten-bayed building dating from the printworks of c.1796. A two-storeyed airing and beetling shed was built in 1839 and a single-storeyed beetling shed was erected in 1898. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
