Scope and Content View from south-east showing train-sheds at St Enoch Station, Glasgow St Enoch was the principal terminus of the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company. It was opened in 1876 and six additional platforms were added between 1898-1902. The design engineers were John Fowler and James Blair. The use of iron roof-trusses in the mid-19th century enabled large spaces to be spanned for the first time without any intermediate support. The iron arches at St Enoch had a span of 60m whilst those in the train-shed at St Pancras had a span of 73m. St Pancras was the London terminus for the Glasgow and South Western Railway expresses and was owned by the Midland Railway. St Enoch Station was demolished in 1977 to make way for the massive St Enoch Centre -a shopping centre and ice rink -in 1981-9. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
