Scope and Content Underside (showing arch-rib and spandrel) of Duchess Bridge over the Esk, Langholm, Dumfriesshire Duchess Bridge was built in 1813 by William Keir junior and is the oldest surviving cast-iron bridge in Scotland. The bridge is made up of two parallel cast iron arches, or arch-ribs. These are braced by transverse-ribs, one of which is visible here (middle right). The triangular shape above each end of the arch is called a spandrel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
