Scope and Content View of steam crane from south-east, Victoria Dock, Dundee Harbour, Tayside Dundee Harbour supported the jute export and whaling industries in the 19th century. The Victoria Dock was begun in 1833 by the harbour engineer James Leslie to designs by Thomas Telford. It was completed 1869-75 by David Cunningham. Victoria Dock was one of two deeper docks built to take larger vessels, and which also had better warehousing and other facilities than the earlier docks in the city. Cranes were a common sight in docks, and were used to load and unload cargoes. This shows the 90-ton steam crane in Victoria Dock. It was made by James Taylor & Company of Birkenhead in 1874. One of the largest cranes in Dundee docks, it was powered by steam. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
