Scope and Content Lifting Bridge over the Union Canal at Gilmore Park, Edinburgh, from the west The Union Canal, designed by Hugh Baird as a canal to carry freight and passenger services between Edinburgh and Glasgow, opened in 1822. It ran from Lothian Road in Edinburgh and joined the Forth and Clyde Canal at Falkirk, a distance of 28 miles. This unusual bridge, close to the Edinburgh terminus, has a short electrically-operated lifting span, and a control cabin within its riveted steel framework. The lattice-girder footbridge (far side) could be used by pedestrians when the bridge was lifted. Today, the Union Canal enjoys a revival as a place of leisure and recreational interests. It is planned to reopen the canal to navigation, and, as part of a Millennium Link, to re-establish travel from 'city to city and coast to coast'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
