Scope and Content Keystone carved with the coat of arms of the city of Edinburgh, Union Canal, Viewforth, Edinburgh The Union Canal, designed by Hugh Baird as a canal to carry freight and passenger services between Edinburgh and Glasgow, opened in 1823. It ran from Lothian Road in Edinburgh and joined the Forth and Clyde Canal at Falkirk, a distance of 28 miles. At Viewforth, the canal is crossed by a bridge, designed by Hugh Baird in 1822, which bears the coat of arms of the city of Edinburgh, a castle representing the founding of the city, on its eastern keystone. Today, the Union Canal enjoys a revival as a place of leisure and recreational interests. It is planned to reopen the canal to navigation, and, as part of a Millennium Link, to re-establish travel from 'city to city and coast to coast'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
