Scope and Content View of fixed lighthouse and fog gun at Ayr Harbour, South Ayrshire Ayr was created a royal burgh c.1205 by King William the Lion. The burgh developed in an L-shaped street-plan around the castle, which was demolished to make way for the Citadel or fort built by Oliver Cromwell in 1652-4. The original harbour was rebuilt in 1713, again in 1724-30, and was much restored in the late 20th century. This shows the cylindrical fixed lighthouse (right) and fog gun (left) at the harbour. Both were erected c.1880 and are made of cast iron. Ayr grew rapidly as a popular coastal resort and administrative centre for the region in the early 19th century. It expanded further in the 20th century and it is now a busy thriving port for coal and freight, and still attracts tourists. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
