Scope and Content Temporary camps at Girvan Mains, South Ayrshire The Roman temporary camps at Girvan Mains were discovered by aerial survey in 1976 and 77, and trenching done in 1977 confirmed their presence. The camps were built on level ground on the N side of the Girvan Water. There are no surface remains of either of the camps, though sections can still be seen as cropmarks in aerial photographs such as this one. A section of ditch with one of the rounded angles can be seen here. The site has been excavated several times due to pipelines and sewage works being built in the area. Notable finds include fragments of a late 1st century glass vessel, and it is possible that the camp was used in Agricola's campaigns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
