Catalogue Number SC 360818

Scope and Content View of gatehouse from east, Dunstaffnage Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunstaffnage Castle stands c.5km north-east of Oban. The original part of the castle was built for the MacDougall Lords of Lorn in the mid-13th century. It was added to in the late 15th or early 16th century when it passed to the Campbell Earls of Argyll. This shows the gatehouse, which stands on the east side of the castle and dates from the late 15th and late 16th centuries. An arch-pointed recess contains a round-arched doorway, the present entrance to the castle, reached by a 19th-century forestair. Further alterations to the castle were made from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and in 1962, the castle was taken into the care of the Department of the Environment (now Historic Scotland), who have carried out extensive repairs.
