Scope and Content Profile of mouldings from Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle passed to the Campbell Earls of Argyll in 1469-70 and was held for them by hereditary Captains, their kinsmen, the Campbells of Dunstaffnage. The castle was a pro-government stronghold until the 9th Earl's failed rebellion in 1685. This shows the decoration of the 16th-century entrance to the castle. The 9th Earl of Argyll, unpopular in the Highlands because he used force to take land, was often regarded as an over-mighty subject. Exiled in 1681, he was executed in 1685 after returning with an army to support the unsuccessful Monmouth Rebellion. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
