Scope and Content Reconstruction of gatehouse of in south wall of Skipness Castle, Knapdale, Argyll Skipness Castle was upgraded to a stone fortress by the Stewart Earls of Menteith, probably when, with John MacDougall of Lorn's help, John Menteith held Knapdale against the MacSweens and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles. The curtain wall projects to support a narrow gatehouse entered from the south-range which would have had a pend for the entrance-passage. The gate was defended by a murder-hole and a portcullis. During the Wars of Independence, Argyll was a war-zone as the English tried to control it by taking sides in local feuds. This blocked any Scottish naval expedition to Ireland, and allowed men and money to be shipped in from the English colonies there. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
