Scope and Content Parapet-level (showing gatehouse) plan of Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougalls of Lorn who lost it in 1309. It passed to the Campbell Earls of Argyll in the 1320s. It was a government base in 1745, and, in 1746, Flora MacDonald's temporary prison. The apartments above the gatehouse were built in the late 16th century incorporating earlier masonry. The garret-chamber in the roof-space has modern dormer windows, probably resembling earlier originals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
