Scope and Content Old Castle Lachlan, Loch Fyne, Argyll Old Castle Lachlan was built some time in the 15th century by the MacLachlan family on land they had owned since at least 1314. It is still in their possession. The castle occupies a strategic position on the shores of Loch Fyne. Until well into the 18th century, Argyll's sea-lanes were more strategically important than its roads. Most trade went by boat, and it was easier to sail on the sea lochs than to march through the mountainous interior where armies were easily ambushed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
