Scope and Content Roman fortlet at Durisdeer, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fortlet at Durisdeer is perhaps the best example of its kind in the area. Sited on a steep-sided ridge, the fortlet guards the Roman road linking Nithsdale and Clydesdale. A single turf-built rampart and ditch, which is partly cut from the bedrock in places, enclose a small interior, with a single gateway facing into the pass. Excavation within the fortlet revealed two timber-built barrack blocks. Fortlets housed between 50-80 auxiliaries in one or two barrack blocks, deployed from a nearby fort on a regular basis. A large proportion of their time was probably spent on local patrols or undertaking manoeuvres. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
