Scope and Content Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougalls of Lorn who lost it in 1309. It passed to the Campbell Earls of Argyll in the 1320s. It was a government base in 1745, and, in 1746, Flora MacDonald's temporary prison. The corner tower (right) and the curtain wall were built by the MacDougalls before 1275. The gatehouse (centre) was modified by the Campbells around 1500. The apartments on top of it are of the late 16th century. At the start of the Wars of Independence, Alexander and John MacDougall of Lorn fought for the Scots, so as to feud with the English-backed MacDonald Lords of the Isles. They permanently switched sides when Robert Bruce murdered their kinsman, Red Comyn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
