Scope and Content South-west ramparts of Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougall lords of Lorn and taken from them by Robert Bruce after a battle and a siege around 1309. The first Campbell Earl of Argyll became custodian in 1321-2. The west tower (left) contained a ground-floor prison. The castle's north corner (right) is rounded, but does not have a tower. The arrow-loops between the walls were probably reached from a wooden platform in the courtyard. At the start of the Wars of Independence, Alexander and John MacDougall of Lorn fought for the Scots, so as to feud with the English-backed MacDonald Lords of the Isles. They permanently switched sides when Robert Bruce murdered their kinsman, Red Comyn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
