Scope and Content First-floor west window embrasure of gatehouse of Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle passed to the Campbell Earls of Argyll in 1469-70 and was held for them by hereditary Captains, their kinsmen, the Campbells of Dunstaffnage. The castle was a pro-government stronghold until the 9th Earl's failed rebellion in 1685. The gatehouse was remodelled by the Campbells around 1500. However, the first-floor interior dates from 16th century, including this embrasure. The window itself may have been rebuilt in the 17th century. The Campbell Earls of Argyll were built up by the Stewart kings of Scotland in order to undermine, and then replace, the local power of the MacDonald Lords of the Isles who were finally dispossessed in 1493.
