Scope and Content Detail of dormer pediment from Kilchurn Castle, Argyll and Bute Kilchurn Castle was founded before 1449 by Sir Colin Campbell on land given to him by his father in 1432. It was a government base during both 18th century Jacobite risings. It was also garrisoned by the Earl of Breadalbane after the 1689 Highland War. This dormer pediment lies within the courtyard of the castle. Triangular in shape, it has three projecting carved fleur-de-lys and bears the initials 'S D C' for Sir Duncan Campbell, 7th of Glenorchy (1583-1631). From the 14th century onwards, tower-houses were built either as 'private lodgings' for the laird's own use within a larger castle complex, or as relatively self-contained fortified residences. They became very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
