Scope and Content View from courtyard of tower-house of Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe, Glenorchy, Argyll Kilchurn Castle was founded before 1449 by Sir Colin Campbell on land given to him by his father in 1432. It was the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy until the 17th century when, as Earls of Breadalbane, they acquired grander castles elsewhere. The tower-house of 1440-60 doubled as a gatehouse, controlling access to the courtyard. In the foreground are the remains of a fallen 16th-century angle-turret. The 17th-century south-east range (right) hides the original first-floor main entrance. Stone tower-houses were popular, especially in lawless regions, from the 14th to the 17th century. They were cheap compared to a proper castle because they were secure against the everyday danger of armed raiders and thieves, but not against artillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
