Scope and Content Interior of north-west range of barracks, Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe, Glenorchy, Argyll Kilchurn Castle was a government base in 1654 when it resisted a Royalist siege, in 1685 during the Earl of Argyll's revolt, and during both Jacobite risings. It was also garrisoned by the Earl of Breadalbane's private army after the 1689 Highland War. The barracks housed about 200 of the Earl's private army. This range consisted of a basement kitchen and three accommodation storeys divided into rooms each with a fireplace and window looking out of the castle (right). The 1689 Highland War was waged on behalf of James II by 'Bonny' Dundee - John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee. His Highlanders swept away General Mackay's government troops at Killiecrankie, but Dundee was killed and the army soon dispersed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
